Abrasion is a major cause of concern in the main equipments found in the thermal industry. There is a growing need for energy in response to the industrialization of many countries, and now as a consequence power plants are now burning low cost fuels. Low quality coal with high percentage of ash, lignite, and petcoke produce dense fuel ash which impacts the refractory lining. In fluidized bed boilers, abrasion is caused by sand added into the fluid bed. For cement plants, the lining is progressively worn off in the lower part of the tower by hot meal. When, in the lower static units abrasion comes from the clinker.

In every case, there are 3 important variables:

  • 1. type of particles (from soft talc to very abrasive coal ash)
  • 2. particle speed
  • 3. impact angle (oblique being the worst)

Abrasion is measured by performing a standard test in which abrasive particles are blown against pre-fired samples. The abrasion resistance is given by the loss of material expressed as a volume in cubic centimeters. The abrasion resistance of monolithic refractories is linked to the aggregate (corundum, silicon carbide and bauxite are better than chamotte), and the matrix. Products with high cold-crushing strength show excellent abrasion resistance.

This test allows us to rank the products:

  • less than 5 cm3 of loss = excellent
  • 5 cm3 to 10 cm3 of loss = very good
  • 10 cm3 to 20 cm3 of loss = good
