WAREHOUSE MANAGEMENT: GETTING THE ORDER RIGHT

Refractory installation

The warehouse foreman or supervisor represents a vital link in the Calderys Quality chain. It is his job to make sure that the right amount of the right product is shipped out in the right packaging to the right customer at the right time.

According to Leo van Riemsdijk, Warehouse Foreman at Calderys Netherlands, "the error rate in order preparation has gone down in recent years for two reasons: first because our SAP application is easy to use and manages our stock so accurately, and secondly because we have devised a simple but reliable method for organizing our pallets in the warehouse."
To make the fork lift truck driver's task easier as he picks up the products, monolithics are divided up into products for gunning and products for casting. To ensure that expiry dates are respected, Leo insists on having one pallet only open for each product at a given time: "When I arrived 8 years ago, there might be 4 or 5 pallets open: by having one pallet only open and respecting the "first in first out" principle, we gain more space and avoid product wastage." When an error does occur in preparing an order, it is generally, says Leo, "because the wrong reference has been keyed in. It's important to follow the right procedure: if a colleague gives me an order by phone without keying it into SAP, I refuse to take it!"

DOUBLE CHECKING FOR 100% COMPLIANCE

At Calderys Taiwan, the warehouse foreman prepares the orders from a shipping list every day, which includes the name of the customers and products, the quantities, and the shipping mark. The fork lift truck driver uses this list to pick up the products, each of which has its own specific location in the warehouse. He checks the quantity and glues the shipping mark onto the order in the preparation area. But before loading into a container, insists Calderys Taiwan Industrial Manager Justin Lin, "the supervisor double-checks the goods to make sure they are 100% compliant with the shipping list."

An organized warehouse, intelligent procedures, strict double-checking: Leo van Riemsdijk and Justin Lin agree that if these vital ingredients are in place, the customer will receive what he is expecting, and Calderys' competitive edge will be even sharper.
