Calderys is the only producer of environmentally friendly tap-hole clays for the Ferroalloy market in South Africa |
Our product range, consisting of over 1000 active formulas fulfilling all of our customer requirements, is the result of decades of R&D work and experience in refractory technology. It has been improved by our innovative teams through interaction with our customers in the field. Our product portfolio has also benefited from the acquisition of established refractory companies, whose products completed our existing range.
The Calderys range was comprised of products that were sometimes very similar to one another. In 2008, the range was rationalized and only the best performing products were retained. Committing ourselves to innovation and continuous improvement, this product portfolio allowed us to focus on a more simplified and enhanced range.
To ease the understanding of our new range, most of our products have been renamed using our international brands CALDE™, ALKON®- our dedicated range for Aluminium contact, and SILICA MIX. Some of our older trademarks and products, which are featured under the new naming system include: PLICAST, PLIGUN, PLIFLOW, MONROX, ULTRACAST, KERCAST, and PHLOX.
At the local level, our well-known brands are Taicast, Taigun in Taiwan and Accmon in India.
In addition, we have developed an easy to understand naming system that takes into account the installation method involved, such as:
CAST: castable (or unshaped) refractories are composed of dry aggregates and a binder that can be mixed with water and poured like concrete (e.g. CALDE™ CAST LX 58,CALDE™ CAST NB 82 QD™, or ALKON® CAST 204 for Aluminium contact). Most refractory castables are installed by casting which requires extensive moulding.
GUN (as in: CALDE™ GUN 815): Installation by gunning requires the transportation of the refractory castables through flexible hoses to the installation position, where the materials are wetted and projected through a handheld nozzle at the target area. This type of installation is well suited when large volumes of refractory are required to reduce installation time and costs.
Dry gunning allows to operate farther ? away from the feed station. It is important to notice that since the amount of water added is determined by the nozzle operator, the person gunning should have enough experience with the particular refractory being used to know how much water to add to get the correct consistency on the wall. Too much water and the material will have low density and strength and could slump of the wall, too little, and the rebound and dusting losses are very high.
RAM (as in: CALDE™ RAM C 90 AB): Refractory plastic mixtures consisting of moistened aggregates can be rammed into place with an air & electric hammer.
FLOW (as in: CALDE™ FLOW MA 92): In the past most castables were installed by gunning or casting, the latter requiring internal or external vibration for the placement of low cement castables to fill in behind forms. The ability of the low cement, self-flowing castables to move behind forms and around anchors in difficult to reach areas is a great advantage in installation. In addition, these self-flowing or pumpable castables may be transported to high elevations (see SPRAYCAST).
DRY: the composition of a dry refractory material is such that it can be installed in powder form without addition of water or liquid chemical binders directly onto a heat source. Those DRY materials are usually placed by ramming or vibration and are very useful for fast repairs, or even initial installation or complete relining of all types of EAF furnaces (e.g. CALDE™ MAG DRY K 85) or induction furnaces.
PATCH (as in: CALDE™ PATCH PT 86 2CP): Patching is the ideal installation method for fast and easy repair of worn linings, especially in the Foundry industry.
PLAST (as in: CALDE™ PLAST C 90 AB):Similar to RAM. Ramming materials have low moisture and are packed bulk in drums whereas plastics are softer and packed as slices in a box. The main applications for plastic materials are in Steel and Reheat Furnaces.
STIX (e.g. CALDE™ STIX PB 85 C/G): STIX materials are dry, ready to use materials after mixing with water. It is similar to PATCH materials but is used for thicker repairs.
SPRAYCAST(e.g. CALDE™ SPRAYCAST F 60 R):The SPRAYCAST method consists of mixing the castable in a high efficiency mixer with the right amount of water, and then pumping the mix with a piston pump up to the place of installation. The application of molds is avoided. Hence, spraycasting (a.k.a. shotcreting) can be cost, time and labor saving.

Low Porosity Dense Gunning (LPGM) materials (e.g. CALDE™ GUN LA 50 SZ, CAL DE™ GUN LM 74 A): A new gunning installation technique for low cement castables (LCC) that allow to provide the same mechanical properties as corresponding LCC while using the same amount of mixing water as traditionally vibrated LCCs.
